Book Tour : Remnants by Carolyn Arnold

Remnants
by Carolyn Arnold
Genre : Crime / mystery

FBI agent and profiler Brandon Fisher and his team are called to Savannah, Georgia, when body parts belonging to three separate victims are recovered from the Little Ogeechee River. As the case takes one dark turn after another, Brandon finds himself embroiled in a creepy psychological nightmare.

Author Interview

Have you ever been on a manhunt or at the scene where a dead body was found?

I took part in my local police department’s Citizen’s Academy. As part of this, I received an inside look at seventeen divisions over a ten-week period. As an added benefit, each student was afforded a ride-along. And mine… Well, I went on the perfect one for a crime writer.

My ride-along actually started out with a manhunt. I experienced the excitement of wanting to find the guy and found myself scrutinizing every male I spotted in the area just to make sure he wasn’t the one we were after. Unfortunately, the search moved to the downtown area from the eastern end of the city where the hunt had begun, and the sergeant signed off the investigation. By the end of my ride-along, about five hours later, the man still hadn’t been found.

After the sergeant left the investigation, he turned to me as he was driving and asked if I had ever seen a dead body. I told him I had at memorials and funerals and then asked why. I soon found out that our next stop involved one.

I figured I’d catch a glimpse of the deceased under a tarp or being wheeled away, but I got far more than that. I received a front-row seat to a death investigation. For hours, the sergeant and I were mere feet away from the body. I witnessed firsthand how it changed color over time, but I also found that I went into detective-mode. The forensic identification unit—essentially CSIs—was called in and arrived with collection kits. The team members gloved up, snapped photographs, took fingerprints from the deceased, and more.

The entire time that I was on scene, I noticed myself going into a detached state—the result of adrenaline. Later that evening, it began to sink in that I had spent hours with a dead body, and I was nauseated. As more time passed, I became weepy as it sank in that the deceased had been a husband, a father, a lover, a friend…a person. That night I dreamed about the man. It wasn’t a nightmare, but I was an officer trying to figure out what had happened to him.

I couldn’t imagine returning to the field the next day and having a similar experience or witnessing something even worse, like a violent murder scene or that of a fatal car accident.

What do members of law enforcement say about your books?

Many testimonials attest that I am pleasing readers in law enforcement. They love that my mysteries are accurate in that regard, and they view that alone as a sign of my respect for them.

Here are a few testimonials that I have received on Eleven (Brandon Fisher FBI series):

“I spent thirty-eight years with a major police department in Missouri, fifteen of which were in the homicide section. I also had numerous dealings with the FBI throughout my career, mostly bank robbery, interstate shipment thefts, and a few kidnappings. Eleven kept my interest piqued throughout… Loved it.”
Richard Bartram, Sergeant (retired), St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, St. Louis, MO

“I am a forty-year veteran of police work. All local, no Fed. Eleven was a great read. All the descriptors and nomenclature were spot on.”
–Joe Danna, Police Officer, Katy Independent School District Police Department, Katy, TX

“Very good! I worked as a police officer for eleven years and with the Federal Bureau of Prisons for twenty-two. I have also dealt with the FBI.”
–Richard Smith, Facilities Development Manager (retired), Federal Bureau of Prisons, Central Office, Washington, DC

“A great police procedural! … Full of twists and turns. The characters are well-developed and a mix of interesting personalities. … Holds your interest to the end!”
–Mark Davis, FBI Special Agent (retired), Washington, DC

What did you do before you became a bestselling author?

For a living, I worked in accounts receivable for a few different companies collecting from businesses. Yet, despite working full time, in 2006 I was reunited with writing. I wrote every chance I got—before work, on lunch breaks, after work, on the weekends. I became so focused on writing and the publishing world that hardly a day went by without them being a part of my life, and since the summer of 2014, I’ve been a full-time author.

How do you know so much about what criminals think?

I can’t answer that without incriminating myself… Just kidding.

Everyone has what we call a “dark side.” In writing these books, I suppose you could say I tap into this side of my psyche. Whatever I can scheme up is possible, and I write that which scares and excites me.

When did you know that you had hit the big time with your books?

When I got to say good-bye to my day job! Even before I fully resigned, I had cut back a five-day a week job to four days, then to three. It got to the point, though, that I loathed going in for that many days, and I knew it was time to make the move and become a full-time author. That was in the summer of 2014. Since then, I incorporated my own publishing company in the summer of 2015, and, at the start of 2016, my husband joined me there full time.

Film review: Beauty and the beast (2017)

Synopsis:

Belle is a beautiful girl with good heart, one day she is looking for her missing father and meet beast. At first, they hate each other but as the time passed, both of them start to fall in love.

Review:

This is the old fairy tale cartoon that I always repeatedly watched when I was 4 years old. I still love this film. This film is the same old fairy tale just better version. Emma Watson is really suitable and beautiful as Belle. I like her singing too. The musical in this film just beautiful and not boring. I enjoy the whole film. I love the connection between Belle and beast.

I like how beast transform from selfish man to considerate and kind man. Being with Belle makes him a better man. This film just real as the old story, everything is beautiful, especially the dress that belle used and the decoration. This is the fairy tale story that I will watch again in the future.

My rating: 8.5/10

Kind regards,

Selene.

Book Blitz : Purr M For Murder by T.C. Lotempio

Purr M for Murder
by T.C. LoTempio
Genre : Cozy Mystery

Sydney McCall left behind an ex-fiancé and a New York advertising job to return home to Deer Park, North Carolina and help her sister, Kat, run the local animal shelter, Friendly Paws. Determined to save the shelter from financial trouble, Sydney and Kat organize a cat café fundraising event at a local coffee shop. Things are looking up until their landlord, Trowbridge Littleton, threatens to shut down the event. When Sydney drops by his art gallery to make peace, she finds Kat--along with Littleton's dead body.

Local homicide detective Will Worthington--who just happens to be Sydney's old high school crush--is highly suspicious of the sisters' involvement. Desperate to clear their names from the suspect list, Sydney pounces on the investigation. With the help of one of the shelter cats, a savvy orange tabby named Toby, Sydney begins poking her nose into other local businesses whose owners may have benefited from Littleton's death--until the killer notices she's pawing a little too closely at the truth.

Excerpt

Will glanced up.  “Pretty observant of you, Syd. The ME will determine the cause of death.”  He tapped on his notebook with the edge of his pen.   “Why don’t you walk me through what happened.  How did the two of you come to be in Littleton’s shop so early?”

“We had something we wanted to discuss with Mr. Littleton, and we thought the earlier the better,” I said.

“I see.  And just what was the nature of this discussion?”

I shifted my weight to my other foot. “Friendly Paws has teamed with Dayna’s Treats & Sweets for a cat café event to benefit the shelter. For a nominal fee, people can have their coffee and goodies in a room with shelter cats that are available for adoption.”

Will glanced up, and I could see a light of interest in his eyes. “I’ve heard of those cafes. They’re mostly in Europe.”

“There are a few in the States, big cities mostly.  This will be the first event of it’s kind  in North Carolina. We’re hoping to increase revenue for both the café and the shelter.”

“Let me guess. That idea didn’t sit well with Littleton?”

Kat and I both shook our heads in unison and Kat exclaimed, “I should say not! He was in the shop yesterday, and he made his feelings pretty darn clear.  He thought having the cats around would be detrimental to business. Heck, he thinks-thought-the shelter in general was a detriment to the town.”

“A sentiment you two didn’t agree with,” he said slowly.

“I should say not!” Kat returned, her cheeks starting to flame.  “Syd and I tried to reason with him yesterday but he dind’t want to hear it.”

“And that’s why you decided to come here this morning?”

I nodded. “Yes.  I put together a pretty good argument of pros for the event.  I was hoping to appeal to his sense of business acumen.”

“Why did you feel this was necessary? Had he threatened you?”

“Not in so many words,” I said carefully. “But he did say yesterday that he was determined to put a stop to the proceedings, and we hadn’t heard the last from him.”

“Um-hm.” Will murmured, scribbling some more.

“And Leila Addams – do you remember her, Will?  She’s a reporter for the Deer Park Herald now,” Kat chimed in.  “Leila said that she thought Littleton was inquiring about starting a petition against showing the shelter cats – and the shelter in general.”

Will made another notation in his book. “So when was the last time you saw Littleton?”

“Yesterday around one-thirty.” I cleared my throat.  “If that’s all the questions you have, we need to get going.”

He snapped his notebook shut.  “You’re free to go for now,” he said, “but I will probably need to talk to you some more later on.”

“That’s fine,” I said.  “We’ll be here.”

The corners of Will’s lips twitched slightly. “Good to know.”

Once we were back out on the street, Kat hauled off and punched  me in the arm – hard.

“Yow!” I cried. “What was that for?”

“For thinking that you could come here and face Littleton without me, for one,” Kat said.  “I knew you had your fingers crossed last night.”

I rubbed at my arm. “Can’t put anything over on you, can I?”

She gave me a shrewd look.  “So, how did it feel, seeing Will Worthington again after all these years!  I heard he was back in town, but I had no idea he’d become a detective – homicide, no less.”  She cut me a sidelong glance. “Funny, isn’t it, how you two came back to Deer Park almost at the same time.  Like Karma, or something.”

“Well, I’d rather deal with Will than his partner, Colombo Junior,” I said. “Come on, let’s get my car and get to the shelter. I hope Maggie isn’t too worried.”

We walked through the alleyway and when we were almost at  the spot where I’d parked, I suddenly stopped short.  “Hey,” Kat cried as she ran full tilt into my back. “What’s wrong?”

I pointed to the empty space beside my car. “There was a white Lincoln there when I came, parked pretty badly.  The license plate read TLITTLE.  I thought for sure it was Littleton’s car, but if it’s gone…”

“A white Lincoln?  That’s his wife Petra’s car,” Kat said.  She glanced around, then pointed to the gym. “She must have parked it here instead of the gym parking lot, like she usually does. I wonder why.”

Another disturbing thought occurred to me as I slid behind the wheel.  It would have been impossible for Littleton’s wife not to have seen the ambulance and police cars parked in front of her husband’s shop.  Why hadn’t she come to see what was wrong?

Unless, of course…she didn’t have to. Because she already knew.

Excerpt: In the deepest reaches of the basements he discovered Noel in the musical instruments room. Simon wasn’t the least bit musical but Ivy was, which meant he was deeply interested in anything along that line, and what in the world was Noel doing? He’d got the top of a grand piano open and the strings were hanging out all over the place. “Greetings,” said Simon. “That’s quite a mess you’ve got there.” Noel looked up with a confused expression on his face. “Oh, it’s you, Binkle. Say, come over here for a minute and hold this, will you?” He held up a string. Simon tromped over to the piano and peered inside. “What are you doing? Did something happen?” “Just hold this please,” said Noel. Simon grabbed the string and pulled tight. “No, not like that,” said Noel. “Just keep it out of the way.” “Oh,” said Simon. He felt like an idiot standing there holding a loose piano string. But he was too curious not to ask. “What are you doing?” “I dropped something. I need to get it out.” “What?” He peered deeper. There was a teensy tiny frog inside. “Oh, I see it. Wait, it’s alive!” “That’s right, it’s alive, and it’s going to be a disaster if I don’t get it out. It belongs to Professor Pargeter and it’s very valuable. It’s also poisonous so don’t touch it.” “Really?” said Simon, reaching for the animal. “How poisonous?” “What did I just say?” said Noel slapping Simon’s hand. “Oh, sorry,” said Simon. He withdrew the hand but stared intently at the little thing, which was obviously so frightened it was turning colors. “Now look what you’ve done,” said Noel.
“It’s brought the poison to the surface. Stand back or it will spit.”

Author Interview

1. Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?
I try to be original in my story telling, but as you write you know if you enjoy it, your audience will as well.

2. What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?
John Saul's A Second Child- It's a thrilling and captivating horror story. One of his best.

What does literary success look like to you?
To be honest, as long as my readers enjoy my stories and ask for more, that's success for me.

3. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
I do hours of research on all my books, usually it's done as an idea pops into my head. It all depends on what I'm writing about. Damian is an FBI agent, so I spent a lot of time on researching FBI methods and language. I also did hours of research on computer hacking for the story. I remember with the first Sunset reads novel I researched the different careers in a publishing house, even how many floors a building in Manhattan should have.

4. Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
I do read them all. I actually look into what my reviewers like or dislike. I sometimes take it an input and develop it into my writing. It's always a learning experience for me, and I learned you're not always going to please everyone.

Film Review: Man up (2015)

Synopsis:

Jack has blind date with Jessica. But Nancy appeared on the their blind date and pretend to be Jessica. Along the way, Jack has connected to Nancy and decide that she is the right one for him.

Review:

This is bittersweet romance comedy you should watch, I don't even know the actress or actor, but this film is not boring and I really like it. I really recommend if you loved romance comedy.

I laugh and cry watching this film, because this film is good. The connection between Nancy and Jack feels so natural and funny. The ending also romantic and sweet. I think there is no reason to not to like this romance comedy. It's just funny and sweet at the same time.

Book Tour : Ice Dragon Tales by Hurri Cosmo

Genre : M/M Romance
Published : February 2017

Prince Joron of Blade Rain was kissed by a man he had no idea was King Aric of Claymoor Doom. Of course King Aric had no idea the one he kissed was even a man since Joron was dressed as a woman. Disguised to escape the newly crowned king of Blade Rain who just happens to be Joron's brother, Joron is swept off his feet by Aric when he is rescued by him from an assault. Aric is also swept off his feet by the beauty of the "woman" and that one amazing kiss. Aric, who is led to believe the beautiful woman he kissed is actually the princess, immediately goes to the king of Blade Rain and offers for the princess’s hand in marriage and his offer is accepted. Unfortunately, King Aric is now betrothed to Liarta, Joron’s sister. But an emergency has King Aric racing home without finding out the mistake he has made and now Joron must ride to Claymoor Doom to renegotiate the offer since Liarta is in love with someone else and does not want to marry King Aric.

Imagine Aric’s surprise when he discovers the Prince is the one he thought was the Princess! So Aric does the only thing he can think of. He will release Liarta from her obligation of marriage, but only if Joron takes her place... in the marriage bed.

Things are going well for King Aric. He had Joron safely hidden away. Diagus, although a continuing threat to Joron, had left his castle empty handed, and the Cetin Gang was headed for his dungeons. He should be thrilled but – something was not right. He could feel it.

Sure enough, when he returns to Claymoor castle, he finds Joron has been kidnapped and he must ride immediately to rescue him. And knowing the culprit, it was not going to be an easy task. However, Aric has a trump card; a letter from a dead king. Seemingly nonsensical at first, it now points a finger directly at a murderer and Aric is convinced Joron is next. Somehow he has to find him and get Joron back into his protective arms before it’s too late.

Unfortunately, there are other huge pitfalls just waiting in the shadows. It turns out Joron is the true king of Blade Rain and Aric's long dead wife miraculously returns to claim Aric as her own. Between all the lies, murders, and life altering revelations, is there hope for these two at all?

King Diagus of Blade Rain is in a bind. He is duty bound to produce a royal heir and the only way he knows that can happen is if he beds a woman. Definitely not his idea of Happily Ever After. In fact, far from it. Except instead of walking down the aisle with the princess he has arranged to marry, Diagus is off in the wilds of Claymoor Doom. But there’s a good reason. Rumor had it there was someone near Gray Valley with Diagus’s stark blue eyes. A possible relative and therefore an heir? Was there a chance he might not have to marry a woman, after all?  Regrettably, Diagus finds no one matching the rumor’s description. What he does find is a heinous, black magic plot for murder and Diagus is the next on the list.

Tama’s pregnant sister claimed to be carrying the child of a king. Not just any king. The mighty king of Blade Rain. She was determined to get out of the very poor house of Hilman and into the lap of luxury. But fate had its own agenda. Sadly, Tama must raise his nephew all by himself after his sister unexpectedly dies in childbirth. It’s not a problem, though. He loves Aydin as he loved his sister – with all his heart.

However, Tama’s lazy and abusive father, Beourn, is angry and extremely disappointed. Being the grandfather of a crown prince, he was looking forward to moving to the castle and living a life of extravagance. With his daughter’s death, that was no longer possible. So, he does the unthinkable. He kidnaps Aydin with the intent of selling him to the rich and powerful king. Tama is stunned he would do such a thing and chases after Beourn to rescue Aydin.

But he doesn’t get far before he is confronted with a beautiful man being viciously attacked. Of course Tama has to help. If he doesn’t the man will surely die. Except Tama quickly learns the man is far more than just someone in trouble. In fact, the man is a king and will change Tama’s life. Forever.

Author Interview

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I have always wanted to be a writer. Always. I remember laying in my crib dreaming up stories about talking horses and saving kidnap victims. Learning to read was amazing to me because I thought about the fact I could write my stories and they would be ever so much better for learning how to read than boring old Dick and Jane. I had hundreds of pages filled with my scribbles, mostly outlines and thoughts, never anything complete. My first completed novel I did a gazillion years ago but after the first three rejections, I gave up. What really opened a brand new, huge, beautiful door for me was M/M. Like so many, I started with manga. I was going to be a manga artist because I suddenly had all these stories I wanted to tell and doing that in pictures just fired my imagination. I had computer files FULL of stories. Then I read a manga novel and decided that was the direction I wanted to go. Then, of course, I found the M/M novel world and never looked back.

What do you think makes a good story?

It varies and really depends on my mood. I think that’s true for everyone. Sometimes I need something light and fluffy with no tear jerking crap. I honestly don’t like too much of that anyway. When I am reading to escape the world, “important literature” just doesn’t interest me. But sometimes I like long, in depth, falling in love stories. Ones that make you excited to get home from work so you can continue to read. However, I truly love the first meeting, slow burn and lots of romance. I always, always love a dominant partner and a submissive one, as well. It doesn’t have to be a true D/s thing, but I really like that one partner is bigger and stronger and just more forceful. I love a little bit of jealousy, some mysterious drama, and a meaningful ending. I read a book just recently that had me at the edge of my seat wondering how they were going to resolve it. It just simply went over the top for me. Not that I was incredibly disappointed in it, it just got to be a little ridiculous although the story itself was good. For that reason I forced myself to get to the end. But then, the actual end…just ended. In my opinion, and probably mine alone, the reader, after enduring the over the top drama for so long, deserved an epilogue or at least something beyond “they survived and escaped”, which is what it felt like to me. Personally, I needed some time to recover before the words “The End”. But I have to say it did tick off all the other boxes for me.

Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer?

Reading, experiencing life, paying attention, listening. Normal stuff. I used to write a lot faster than I do now. I hope I haven’t lost my edge. I do have a full time job now, so that eats into my time. I tend to do the seven hour trek to my mom’s house a lot more these days, too, because she’s sick. But more so, I think it’s because I haven’t done as much reading as I used to. So I am going to treat myself to that.
What is the most surprising things you learned in creating your books

I absolutely love when the characters I create take on a life of their own and take over the story, often times going in a different direction then I had originally had them going. I love it when I run into a plot problem that has already been solved somewhere else in the story, I just have to find it. I love it when I go to write a sequel when I really didn't have a clue I would be writing a sequel but I am still able to take stuff from the first book and make it work. That kind of stuff happens all the time and it surprises me every time it does.

Where do you get your ideas for your books?

Right now I get them from a file I have in my computer. But originally I got those ideas from all over the place. Mainly from reading other stories, watching shows or movies, things that happen in my life or things that people tell me about. Sometimes even dreams I have. I love it when an idea hits. Especially one that gives me the whole story right away. Some of those ideas are not as well thought out, though. I still go back to some of them now and kick myself for not putting down more information because I have no idea where I was going with it. So these days when an idea comes I make sure to write everything down.

Author Bio

I live in Minnesota where I holds tight to the idea that here, where it’s cold a good part of the year, I won’t age as fast. Yep, I avoid the truth as much as I avoid mirrors. But one of the reasons I love writing is reality doesn’t always offer up a “happily ever after” and being able to take control of that is a powerful lure. Being a happy ending junkie, writing just makes them easier to find. Oh, I doesn’t mind “real life” and I do try to at least keep it in mind when I write my stories, but I truly love creating a wonderful couple, knowing they will fall in love and have their HEA. Every - single - time. And, of course, that is exactly the reason I love reading this genre, too. Give me a glass of red wine, some dark chocolate, and my computer, whether I am reading or writing, and I will entertain myself for hours. The fact I actually get paid to do it, is Snickers bars on the frosting on the cake.
