Book Spotlight : Positively Pippa by Sarah Hegger

Overview :

“Sarah Hegger's voice is rich and witty and in a word, addictive.” --Terri Osburn

From author Sarah Hegger comes an exciting new series set in small-town Utah, where secrets don’t keep for long—and love turns up in the most unexpected places.

For Pippa Turner there’s only one place to go when her life self-destructs on national TV—home to Ghost Falls, and her heavily perfumed, overly dramatic, but supremely loving grandmother, Philomene. If anyone will understand how Pippa’s hit makeover show was sabotaged by her vengeful ex, it’s Phi. But she’s not the only one who’s happy to see her—and Pippa can’t help but wonder if Matt Evans, her gorgeous high-school crush turned Phi’s contractor, is game for a steamy close-up…
Matt owes his whole career to Phi and her constant demands to embellish the gothically ridiculous house he built for her. Getting to see red-headed, red-hot Pippa is a bonus, especially now that she’s no longer the troublesome teenager he remembers. He’s willing to stay behind the scenes while she gives her own life a much-needed makeover, but not forever. As far as he’s concerned, their connection is too electric to ignore. And the chance to build something lasting between them—before she can high-tail it back to Hollywood—is going to the top of his to-do list…

Excerpt :

“Aren’t you—?”

“No.” Not anymore she wasn’t. Pippa snatched her boarding pass from the check-in attendant and tugged her baseball cap lower over her eyes. Couldn’t Kim Kardashian help a girl out and release another sex tape or something? Anything to get Pippa away from the social media lynch mob. She kept her head down until she found her gate, and chose the seat farthest away from the other passengers waiting to board the flight to Salt Lake City. Latest copy of Vogue blocking her face, she flipped through the glossy pages.

Peeping over the top of her magazine she slammed straight into the narrowed gaze of a woman three rows over. Shit! Pippa dropped the woman’s gaze and went back to Vivienne Westwood bucking the trend.

Across the airport lounge the woman’s glare beamed into the top of her head like those laser tracking things you saw in spy movies. Pippa buckled under the burn and slouched lower into her seat.

Look at that, Fendi was doing fabulous separates this season. And really, Ralph Lauren, that’s your idea of a plus-size model? Stuff like this made her job so much harder.

Her former job.

Losing her show still clawed at her. Losing? Like she’d left the damn thing at Starbucks as she picked up her morning latte. More like her jackass ex with zero conscience had knocked it out of her hand. Framed, stitched up, wrongfully accused—judged, found guilty, and sentenced to a plethora of public loathing wiping out all the years spent building her career. Burning sense of injustice aside, she was stuck in this thing until it went away.

Angry Woman lurked in her peripheral vision. As sweat slid down her sides, Pippa tucked her elbows in tight and risked another glance.

Under an iron-gray row of rigidly permed bangs, the woman’s mouth puckered up.

Back to Vogue. The knot in her stomach twisted tighter, and she checked her cap. What the hell? A baseball cap and shades always worked for other celebrities. Why not her?

Angry Woman squared her shoulders and huffed.

This could go one of two ways. Either Angry Woman would come over and give her a piece of her mind on behalf of women everywhere, or she’d confine her anger to vicious staring and muttering. Maybe some head shaking. Please don’t let her be a crusader for women. Please, please, please. After two weeks of glares, stares and condemnation, Pippa had gotten the message:

Pippa St. Amor, the woman America loves to hate.

Right now, all she wanted was to sneak home and stay there until someone else topped her scandal. God, didn’t Vogue have anything fresh? She’d make a list. Lists were good. Soothing. Item one, run away from Angry Woman and hide in the bathroom. Item two, get your career back. She moved item two up to first place, where it had been since she left home at eighteen, and gauged the distance between her and the bathroom door. She’d never make it.

Angry Woman lifted her phone and snapped a shot of Pippa.

Damn, she’d forgotten that option; this one by far the worst. God, she hated Twitter. And Facebook. And Instagram, and Snapchat, and whatever-the-hell new social torment site some asshat was thinking up right this minute. The ongoing public derision chipped off bits of her until she felt like an open nerve ending.

A friend huddled next to Angry Woman, long hair that was totally the wrong shade of brown and aged her by ten years at least. If Pippa had her on the show, Long Hair would be wearing a cute, hip cut, a fresh new makeup look, and mile-wide smile with her new sense of self.

The reveals never got old. There was something about a woman finally seeing her own beauty that made all the other crap that went with a television career worth it. Ray had ripped that away from her too.

Pippa was getting it with double barrels now. Lips tight, matching twin spots of outraged color staining their cheeks as they whispered over Angry Woman’s phone. They both wore mom jeans. Up until two weeks ago it had been her mission to deliver moms everywhere from jeans like that. Along with those nasty, out of shape T-shirts they sold in three-packs of meh colors that had no business existing on the color spectrum. Angry and Long Hair were so her demographic. They’d probably seen the original episode live and watched it over and over again on demand or something. Maybe even watching it right this minute on YouTube.

YouTube! She hated YouTube, too.

Why didn’t they call her flight already and get her the hell out of here?

About Author :

Born British and raised in South Africa, Sarah Hegger suffers from an incurable case of wanderlust. Her match? A hot Canadian engineer, whose marriage proposal she accepted six short weeks after they first met. Together they’ve made homes in seven different cities across three different continents (and back again once or twice). If only it made her multilingual, but the best she can manage is idiosyncratic English, fluent Afrikaans, conversant Russian, pigeon Portuguese, even worse Zulu and enough French to get herself into trouble.

Mimicking her globe trotting adventures, Sarah’s career path began as a gainfully employed actress, drifted into public relations, settled a moment in advertising, and eventually took root in the fertile soil of her first love, writing. She also moonlights as a wife and mother.

She currently lives in Littleton, Colorado, with her teenage daughters, an evolving pet army and aforementioned husband. Part footloose buccaneer, part quixotic observer of life, Sarah’s restless heart is most content when reading or writing books.
I love to hear from readers.

Book Review : Dangerous Brains by Erik Hamre

Synopsis :

Brilliant computer scientist, Vladimir Sorovis, is packing up his office when his day is interrupted by a military helicopter carrying a highly unexpected guest.

Ushered to a secret location deep in the Nevada desert, Vladimir learns how his former employer, billionaire and serial-entrepreneur Andrew Kevorkian, has been siphoning off hundreds of millions to fund a clandestine deep tech research lab.

Now the Government holds grave fears for what Kevorkian may have created at his lab.

With world order as we know it at stake, Vladimir and a select team of AI-experts are catapulted into a race against time to understand exactly what they are dealing with.
Things, however, are not always what they seem…

Review :

This is the first time I read story from Mr. Hamre and I can say for sure not the last time. Really great science fiction story.

First I want to talk about the characters. Actually I like all the characters except their names. But of course it was just me. Anyway, the main character is Vladimir Sorovis. He is star engineer working at defunct Neuralgo, brain mapping company. One day he get surprised visit from Head of DARPA because of his involvement with Kevorkian. And the rest they say is history.

Well, I will be honest. At first this story doesn't really interest me. You can say that I have reader block at the time. Don't know why I just cannot finish it, until one day I decide that I have to finish this. And I can tell for sure that I am glad I did it. The story is unique and interesting. It keeps you hook until the end. The ending is really unpredictable. Still there's some mystery left but I can tolerate it because I really like the story. My only critique is the story was quite narrow. I mean I can understand that it want to focus the story only for certain things. But it was done at the expense of making it less grand and quite unbelievable. And the lack of epilogue doesn't help either. Still I appreciated the author efforts to make great science fiction and unpredictable story.

I really recommend this story for all science fiction lovers. Cannot wait for Mr. Hamre next book.

K-drama: Shining Inheritance/Brilliant Legacy (2009)

Synopsis:

Go Eun Sung and his autism brother were devastated by death of their father and they have to survive on their own. Later Go Eun Sung saved a rich grandmother who impressed with her personality and wants to give her inheritance to Eun Sung.

Review:

This is a modern cinderella story. Go Eun Sung need to take care of her autism brother and live on their own selves after being chased out from house by her step mother. Later she meets old grandmother who apparently own Jin Sung Enterprise and wants to give Eun Sung the company as inheritance.

This drama is focus on family story and square love issues. It is quite complicated yet interesting drama. I like all the castings for main role, they really suit for their roles. I like the strong characteristic of the 4 main roles here. Eun Sung is a kind girl who likes to hard work and help other peoples. Hwan is arrogant boy who is very bossy. Seung Mi is a kind girl who loves Hwan and like to do anything just to get Hwan even bad things and Park Jun Se is mature man who likes to pursue his culinary career and protective of Eun Sung.

The story of this drama is pretty unique and I like the connection between Hwan and Eun Sung. They firstly meet because of luggage exchanged issue and later Hwan hates Eun Sung because his grandmother wants Eun Sung to inherit what actually belongs to him. During the process, he starts to feel for Eun Sung and fall in love with her. I like how this drama is taking their connections slowly and not rushing. We can see simple things Hwan did for Eun Sung each episodes. Every episode has something new to happen, this drama keeps moving with each episodes. The only thing I want is I hope this drama has more humor, more funny scenes instead of more tense and sad scenes.

Hwan and Eun Sung relationship starts from hate become love relationship. They disliked each other before fall in love. If you like this kind relationship, this drama is absolutely for you and definitely should be in your list.

My rating: 8/10

K-drama: Jealousy Incarnate (2016)

Synopsis:

A love triangle between Pyo Na Ri, a weather anchor with her fellow Lee Hwa Sin and Lee Hwa Sin bestfriend, Go Jung Won.

Review:

This is one Korean drama that I really feel like to review after Another Miss Oh. I watched some korean drama in between but none really capture my heart. I watched this during my lunch time at this website. I do not have much expectations, but the drama getting more interesting each episode and without my realization, I become addicted to this Korean drama and I love the ost soundtrack of this drama so much. The ost of this drama could be found at youtube.

The story of this drama is pretty simple, Pyo Na Ri had 3 years crush on Lee Hwa Sin, but Lee Hwa Sin always ignored her. Lee Hwa Sin bestfriend, Go Jung Won Likes Pyo Na Ri. Pyo Na Ri always be at Hwa Sin side whenever he needs support. Like when he diagnosed with breast cancer, Pyo Na Ri is always help him and at his side. Slowly Lee Hwa Sin developed feeling for Pyo Na Ri.

What I liked from this drama is its pretty focus on the main characters and the relationship between Pyo Na Ri and Lee Hwa Sin seems natural and slow-but-sure, unlike recent Korean drama which relationship is moving too fast. Although I do not know any actor playing this drama, I have to admit they all have good acting that keeps me going to watch this drama.

What I do not like from this drama is sometimes the story feels like too dragging for couple of episodes, total episode is 24 and with that simple story, Couple of episodes should be combined into one instead of couple of episodes. This love triangle is so simple yet many unnecessary problems or details get into it.

The ones that always be the end of episodes are always about this love triangle scenes that arouse curiosity, nothing else. Yet, this still feel interesting. This drama also suitable for mature audiences. The problems in this drama is pretty heavy like breast cancer and infertility issues. Both Pyo Na Ri and Lee Hwa Sin looks professionals at their job which makes us see them as professional news anchors instead of actors.  I recommend this drama if you like simple love triangle romance. The story is easy to follow and the acting of actors will capture your mind.

My rating: 7/10

Game Review : Top Secret

Dear All,

Currently I am playing game called Top Secret. What ? Top Secret ? What kind of secret ? Well, I know about this game from Kickstarter on 2015. This game was developed by James Long (indie programmer). It just recently released for public.

What kind of game Top Secret is ?

Maybe you guys have some idea after seeing the picture. There's several big radars and a building. Guess what is the connection between big radar and building. Well, it turns out the connection is TOP SECRET. The secret collected by NSA (No Such Agency ??? LOL).

Well, in this game, you played as Senior Intelligence Analyst in NSA. You were given task to find who leaked secret NSA material to Journalists. According to James, this game was inspired by Snowden Leaks. There are 2 ways to play this game. You can play it using real email (with internet connection, real time messages, and real time encryption). Or the simple one, you can play it using computer without internet and immediately (using Fast Forward button of course).

You can see from the picture about. You will get several emails. You have to reply them and from there, you have to find clue. Depending on your reply, it will affects the ending. From what I know there are 4 endings. All this time, I only get 2 endings. Good ending and worst ending

Anyway, the game is quite short. I really mean it. You can finish it less than 30 minutes (of course if you are playing real time, it will take 2 weeks in effect). Overall, this is an interesting and unique games. Unfortunately, it was quite simple and straightforward. Despite multiple ending, actually there are not many choices you can take. You just keep following the story. It would be much better if it was longer and more unpredictable. Anyway, I kind understand the programmer difficulty with that case. Still with enough time and resources, I think it can be implemented. One bad point that I've noted is the game was not released on Steam. So you can only get it via developers web page. The good points is I learned about PGP encryption. So, I can be a little mysterious and secret. Haha

Anyway, I still recommend this game for espionage game lovers. I hope in the future, there will be more and more game played via email. It certainly is very interactive. You can get the game here Top Secret

Update#1 : I already get the 3rd ending. Now I want to change my mind. It looks like 3rd ending is the best one. Because ... well I cannot spoil it right. Cannot wait to get the 4th ending ^^

Update#2 : I can say for sure 4th ending could be your dream comes true or your nightmare depending on your opinion regarding Snowden leaks.

I am glad that I already found all the ending. Still it doesn't change anything about my review.

Book Review : Infinity Born by Douglas E Richards

Synopsis :

A breathtaking near-future thriller. The new novel by the NY Times bestselling author whose books have been downloaded over a million times.

When DARPA’s billion-dollar program to create Artificial Superintelligence is sabotaged, US operative Cameron Carr is tasked with finding the culprit. He’s been on high-stakes missions before, but this time the stakes are nothing less than the future of humanity. Because the race to evolve a superintelligent computer is on, and power players around the world will stop at nothing to get there first.

In the right hands, Artificial Superintelligence could lift humanity to towering heights. But in the wrong hands, this technology could represent the greatest threat humanity has ever seen . . .

Ripped from tomorrow’s headlines, Infinity Born is a roller-coaster ride of a thriller that explores the deadly perils and mind-blowing possibilities that await the human race—including both extinction and immortality.

As our phones and computers become ever smarter, Infinity Born takes an unblinking look at a technological tipping point that is just around the corner. One that will have a profound impact on the future course of human history.

Review :

At last, I really love the cover and tittle. Very science fiction. It really shows what the story is all about.

I respect Mr. Richards for being able to make great story. I have no doubt about all his science fiction story. It is a must read for me. This is stand alone story. Not continuation from his Nick Hall series. The main character is Cameron Carr, Naval lieutenant and special ops, in USA. He was tasked with the job to solve who sabotaged US efforts to develop AGI program. The other characters are couple David Bram and Riley Ridgeway, Isaac Jordan, etc. To be honest I think all of them are interesting characters if not a little bit bland. I don't mean it's not interesting. It just your typical hero and genius characters. And I like the bad guys. I mean it was quite rare to have smart bad guys.

The story is very interesting. It was about AI. I won't tell you the detail because the science was a little bit too heavy for me. Mr Richards craft the story expertly. Unfortunately I don't quite like the opening. Not bad but a little too hasty for my liking. And the ending doesn't help either. Unlike his previous science fiction stories, this one is quite straightforward and predictable. After you read certain part, you kind of know how it will end. All in all, it was a little too long for its own good. I don't know why but the narrative and several change point of view is quite not smooth. It is jumping but it was all explained at the end.

Anyway, the themed was quite similar with Split Second. But I prefer Split Second much more than this one. It just that Mr Richard should tone his science a little bit and make the story unpredictable. Still it is great story and make you wanting for more. I really recommend this story for science fiction lovers.

Book Review : Emergence by Nick M Lloyd

Synopsis :

The Gadium have been ruling the galaxy for millennia, manipulating probability to ensure their continued domination.

On Earth, Jack Bullage survives a horrendous car accident.

Reporter Louise Harding has a score to settle with Jack. She investigates all the options, even the most unbelievable ones.

How did he get to be so lucky?

The Gadium have the answers. They know why Jack is special. It’s just evolution; he’s developing the ability to ‘ride the parallels.’

This could herald Earth's Emergence, a new era, an end to its isolation in the galaxy – but Gadium approval is not assured and Jack may be evolving too fast for their plans.

Review :

It's been a long time since I finished my last book. To be honest the cover doesn't really appeal to me, but somehow it makes me check the blurb and I am glad I did it. It turned out the story was much better than the cover.

First I want to say that there are several main characters. Don't let the blurb make you think Jack is the only main characters. Actually I thought Gadium commanders are the main one. People who watch anime Tytania will understand what I mean. On one side we have earth people like Jack, Louise, Jeff, Bob, James, etc. On Gadium side we have Justio, Aytch, Jenkins, Sharnia, etc. Their lives interact and influence each other. I will be honest the science part is too deep for my brain (or maybe I am just too dense to understand it ? LOL). Anyway, I just skip it and continue with the story. I don't know whether my lack of science knowledge affect my understanding of this story or not. But, certainly it would be better if the author make the hypothetical science much more simple.

Anyway, the story itself is very interesting at least the premise. It just that there are too many characters with different point of view but lack of function. I mean it feels like they are there just for the sake of being there (or to scramble our brain ??? LOL). I always love story with different point of view from different characters, as long as it doesn't make the story too long. Unfortunately in this case, I feel the story was dragged because of unnecessary different point of view that led to nothing. Basically it sacrifice quality for quantity. Even I believe it affects the ending. After certain pages, you become impatient with the story and just want to know how it will end. There are certain things that was not explained clearly. Maybe you need to reread it again and again to completely understand it. Or maybe you don't because that's just plot hole. I don't know.

For all of it's good and bad, I still recommend this book for science fiction lovers because it was unique and well ... still quite mainstream. Cannot wait for the sequel because the conflict certainly intriqueful and the author left the ending open for next installment.

My rating : 4 of 5 stars

Author Interview :

1. How long did it take you to write Middle South?

Review: Forever Rose (2017)

Synopsis:

Alessandro Santini back to year 1737 because of supermoon event that open the portal to go back to years behind. He met Rose Estes. The portal only open every fourteen months. While back in 1737, he learns a lot about Rose and her family. Suddenly there is an accident that almost take Rose' life, Alex had to go back to his time to obtain medicine to save Rose in time otherwise he will lose her like he lost his late wife.

Review:

Alessandro Santini is a doctor in his time which is year 2037, he personally had rough past time. He lost his wife because he could not save her in time. He had been through therapy, but the pain still in his heart. One day, there is supermoon phenomenon that open the portal to different time. He accidentally go through that portal and back to year 1737 and met Rose Estes. He likes her at the first sight actually and as the time passed he learnt that there is some people wants to take Rose' life. the first attempt is at their meeting and later when Rose' life in danger, Alex had to go back to his time to obtain the medicine in time and come back to 1737 to save Rose, otherwise he will lose Rose like he lost his late wife.

Actually this story is different from what I had imagine when I read the synopsis the first time. I was thinking the story is about a man that can go back and forth to past and future not a man that is trapped in 1737. This story is historical love story. Around page 100, I still not sure where the story's going and around page 837 Alex just be able to back to his 21st century time to get medicine for Rose. I found this novel is pretty boring. the story is pretty slow and it makes me bored. I hope the story could be more dynamic so even its historical it won't feel bored.

The writing itself is pretty good. I understand the whole story. I understand the pain that Alex felt and How he notices Rose pretty well and how they like each other. If you really into historical love story, this book is for you.

My rating: 3.5/5

Kind regards,

Selene.
